I remember the first time I played Minecraft, I received an issue of my favourite local gaming magazine and on the DVD that accompanied it, was The Minecraft PC Gamer Demo. I had never heard of it before, but according to the magazine it was brilliant, so I gave it a try. I was launched into a world, with all the physics of ours(some are excluded), yet, it was completely pixelated, and everything was made of blocks, each with different textures. I had no idea of how to play at all, but after I dug my first hole, I immediately loved it.

Minecraft is unlike any other game you will ever experience. Developed by Markus “Notch” Persson and his team, Minecraft is a game that will explore the player’s imagination, and allow them to show it all off in the game. It also uses player initiative to utilize all available in-game objects and tools, to create things they never knew they could.

Blocks, tools, Mobs, animals, and crafting are just a few of the key words in Minecraft. The entire world of Minecraft is made of blocks, each with their own different textures, for example, dirt on the ground is brown with green grass on top. specific blocks are more rare than others, such as diamond ore, of which there are only 4-5 in about every 2500 blocks. Minecraft incorporates tools to manipulate blocks in order to collect them. Examples of tools include the shovel, pick axe and wood axe. The strength of these tools are determined by what they are made of, the strongest element being diamond. Minecraft also has a various range of animals, ranging from chickens to wolves.

There are creatures in Minecraft aren’t so friendly however. A few include Zombies, Skeleton Archers, and worst of all...Creepers.

The three  main ways of manipulating blocks into your own tools and items, include crafting, smelting and enchanting. Crafting plays a MAJOR role in Minecraft, allowing the player to use the resources at their disposal to create tools and objects for them to use. For example, two wooden sticks and three wooden planks are needed to make a wooden pick-axe. Smelting works through a furnace in which you can cook food, and melt elements out of there ore form. Enchanting uses an enchantment table to magically modify weapons and tools to become more powerful.

Collecting all these resources, building your empire, defeating Mob, Minecraft has a lot to offer, and allows the player to shape their entire world, in any way they want to. Be it by yourself, at a LAN or online, Minecraft has given fun, creativity and gaming a whole new meaning. It’s unlike anything you will ever experience, and it’s something for everyone to play.

Ups: Fun, creative and adventurous. Creates its own new genre. Style of presentation is unique and brilliant.

Downs: Can be glitchy at times. Online is a hassle.
